Description
There shall be a Governor for each designated region of NATS who shall be a Full Member in Good Standing of the Association, and who shall be elected by the membership of that region by vote. Regional Governors shall assume office at the conclusion of the annual Board meeting or National Conference (next is June 2018), serve for two years, and may succeed themselves once.
Regional Governors shall have direct responsibility over the affairs of their regions and for the coordination and operation of the districts falling within their regional boundaries according to these Bylaws.
Regional Governors appoint District Governors and are authorized to appoint those regional officers they deem necessary for the successful operation of regional activities. Regional Governors shall be provided an annual approved reimbursement fund, in an amount determined by the Association from time to time, for the carrying out of their responsibilities.
The Regional Governor may appoint a Regional cabinet made up of present officers at all levels and past Regional Governors who reside within the region, provided they remain full or Emeritus Members of the Association. This cabinet shall act as a Regional Board and assist the Governor in proper administration of the region.
District Governors It is the job of the regional governor to appoint district governors, whose primary purpose is to ensure all of the members of the district are served, especially those not in a chapter, with a secondary purpose to increase the number of teachers NATS serves by seeking new members.
NATSAA Coordinate and oversee the NW Region’s only round of NATSAA. The next regional NATSAA will be in the fall of 2019. Responsibilities include arranging for 9 – 12 judges, commitment of helpers, contract with a venue to hold the event, and reporting to the national NATSAA coordinator.
Regional Conference The next conference should be held in Alaska or British Columbia in the fall of 2019. The Regional Governor is responsible for all aspects of the conference. They will create a team who will handle every aspect from securing a venue to arranging for presenters and registration.
NSA The Regional level of the National Student Auditions is currently entirely on line, with Hsin Yi Lin, Oregon, serving indefinitely as the NW Region NSA Chair. The chair will need to consult with the regional governor on many aspects of the event.
Finances The region is allocated a little over $3300 each year (based on the number of members) to be used in that calendar year. It is used to cover expenses of NATSAA, the Regional Conference, and flights to the national conference and board meetings. The Regional Governor should also budget this money to cover travel to each chapter during their two year term, preferably in the non-conference year. The Regional Governor should appoint a treasurer to oversee the finances.
Website The Regional Governor is responsible for upkeep of nwnats.org. A volunteer could be appointed for this job.
Communication The membership has enjoyed receiving quarterly newsletters, updates on Facebooks, and direct emails as needed. For the newsletters, it is recommend to enlist a volunteer to do layout. The Facebook page is administered by Craig Tompkins.
Travel The Regional Governor is expected to attend NATS National Board Meetings in June or July each year, and it is hoped the in-coming Regional Governor will attend the national board meeting which takes place just one week prior to their term beginning. For non-conference years, meetings are held in Florida. The Regional Governor should also visit all chapters, and chapters are especially appreciative if he/she helps adjudicate.
National Board member commitment
Serving as a board member of NATS involves a very special commitment. To meet that commitment, board members are expected to:
• ensure adherence to the NATS mission.
• attend and actively participate in all of the board's meetings (annually in person and more frequently online), and notify the executive director or president of anticipated absence.
• review minutes and results of missed meetings.
• do their preparatory work in order to participate fully in board and committee meetings.
• serve actively on committees as needed.

- Believe in the cause and mission of NATS.
- Will commit completely to regional responsibilities and national board member responsibility.
- Will participate actively as part of the NATS Board team.
- Are proven leaders and will advocate strongly for NATS.
- Past leadership role in a chapter or district board position
- Excellent organizational skills
- Be able to commit 10 to 20 hours per month to the position
- No salary – this is a volunteer position
- Board members will be reimbursed for expenses actually incurred, in accordance with the limitations of their current budgets.
- July 2018 – July 2020 with an option of a 2nd term.
